Occupational Therapist-Led Mindfulness Training Program for Older Adults Living with Early Cognitive Decline in Primary Care: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

Background: Community-dwelling older adults with early cognitive deficits experience less efficiency in performing everyday life tasks, resulting decreased satisfaction and other adverse psychological outcomes. Mindfulness training has been linked to improvements and, most recently, identified as a potential intervention supporting performance of activities. Objective: This study aimed evaluate whether mindfulness practice can improve perceived activity secondary Methods: is pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) an interprofessional primary care team Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The participants were 27 aged 60 years age or living deficits. Participants into 8-Week program (n = 14) group Wait-List Control (WLC; n 13) compared at baseline, post-intervention 4-weeks follow-up. MANOVAs post-hoc independent t-tests used compare between groups different time points. Results: There was significant improvement anxiety for the WLC post-intervention; Time-2 (mean difference 3.90; CI 0.04-7.75; p 0.04) large effect size (d 0.80). Conclusion: significantly improved scores patients post-intervention. Further work required test sustainability reduced over time, but this demonstrated that MBSR promising those warrants pursuit future exploring how long effects would be sustained.
